I'm no fan of Maduro, but no New York jury’s going to convict him

Palast discusses the kidnap of Maduro, and the developing situation in Venezuela with Rick Smith

Even though I’ve known Nicolas Maduro for many years, I’m no fan. He stole his last election — that’s not even a question. But that’s not why we’re in Venezuela. We’re not there to protect democracy. We’re not there to stop narco terrorism. Maduro’s not running drugs because, number one, the United States government has kept such a lockdown control and embargo on that nation that you’d have to be out of your mind to run drugs through Venezuela.

The United Nations Annual Drug Trafficking Report says very clearly that Venezuela does not produce drugs, neither cocaine nor fentanyl. Fentanyl is made in Mexico using precursors from China, cocaine comes from Colombia. And the reason is simple; look at a damn map. Venezuela’s only coast is on the Caribbean. No sane drug dealer’s gonna be moving drugs through the Caribbean, especially with the US military scouring the area. Cocaine comes from Colombia and Ecuador up the Pacific Coast because you’ve got the Pacific Ocean.

So, the whole idea is ridiculous. And I’m gonna put my money on this: unless they move the jurisdiction, there’s going to be a New York jury that’s going to decide the fate of Maduro. And they’re not gonna convict him. No New York jury’s gonna believe this BS.
