Greg Palast: The No Kings Speech

Full speech from the #NoKings rally in Waterfront Park, San Diego.

I was listening to people talking at the No Kings rally in San Diego this past Saturday, and it made me think of something that is very important. It’s about the time I got something off my chest…

I am here illegally.

My grandmother snuck into Chicago across the bridge at Windsor with my two uncles. They fought in World War II for the United States, my illegal family.

And then, one week before my grandmother’s 100th birthday, La Migra grabbed her — ICE got her.

They called my father and said, you know, your mother’s here illegally. And he said, well, send her back.

The agent said, what do you mean? We asked her, she’s been here over 80 years, she doesn’t remember where she comes from. What do we do with her?

My father said, I don’t know, just send her back.

So then the agent asked to talk to someone more “sensible” in our household. So they talked to me.

Again the agent asked, what should we do? And I said, let me tell you something, brother: My family and other immigrants built this nation. And let me tell you, buddy, in America, it’s not where you come from, it’s where you’re going. That’s America to me. Don’t take her back.

They didn’t.
